Eligible veterans and surviving spouses can receive up to $2,266/month toward in-home care — including the personal care services KindCare KC provides.
About the Benefit
VA Aid & Attendance is a pension benefit on top of the basic VA pension — paid monthly, tax-free, directly to the veteran or surviving spouse to help cover the cost of personal care assistance.
Paid directly to the veteran or surviving spouse each month. Use it to pay for in-home care, assisted living, or nursing home costs. Not a reimbursement — proactive monthly payment.
Personal care assistance at home qualifies — bathing, grooming, dressing, mobility, medication reminders. The care doesn't have to be medical or provided by a licensed agency.
This benefit requires a separate application to the VA. Many eligible veterans never receive it simply because they didn't know to apply. We help families start that process.
Once approved, benefits are typically paid back to the date of application — so applying sooner means more money. Average approval takes 6–12 months; retroactive pay covers the wait.
Eligibility Checklist
Answer these questions to get a quick read on eligibility. All three groups must apply. Most Johnson County veteran families are surprised how many of these they meet.
VA Aid & Attendance requires meeting three categories of criteria: military service, medical need, and financial limits. Check every box you can answer yes to.
What Qualifies
Personal care assistance — even non-medical — counts toward Aid & Attendance. Here's exactly what qualifies:
Help with bathing, grooming, dressing, and oral hygiene. One of the most common qualifying ADLs — and one of our most-requested services.
Assisting a veteran to safely move around the home, get in and out of bed or a chair, and prevent falls. Qualifies directly under ADL assistance criteria.
Reminding veterans to take prescribed medications at the right times. Doesn't require a nurse — non-medical reminders qualify.
Cooking meals and assisting with eating when needed. Counts as ADL support toward Aid & Attendance qualification.
For veterans with Alzheimer's or dementia, supervision and behavioral support qualifies. KindCare KC specializes in veteran + dementia dual care at $34/hr.
Accompaniment to appointments, errands, and social engagement. While not directly an ADL, this care is frequently bundled with qualifying services.
Why KindCare KC
Working with veteran families is different — and we've built our service specifically around it.
We help families understand the Aid & Attendance application process — what documents are needed, how to structure care costs to maximize the benefit, and who to contact at the VA.
Our caregivers understand veteran culture, common service-related conditions (PTSD, TBI, mobility issues), and how to provide care that respects a veteran's sense of independence and pride.
Many veteran families deal with both PTSD/TBI and dementia simultaneously. We specialize in this combination — one caregiver trained for both at $34/hr.
We'll talk through your situation, answer your questions, and give you honest guidance — whether or not KindCare KC ends up being the right fit. We're here to help the family, not make a sale.
We'll review eligibility with you, explain the application process, and match you with a caregiver who understands veteran care. No commitment required.
