What is VA Aid & Attendance?

VA Aid & Attendance is a pension benefit on top of the basic VA pension — paid monthly, tax-free, directly to the veteran or surviving spouse to help cover the cost of personal care assistance.

💰

Monthly cash benefit

Paid directly to the veteran or surviving spouse each month. Use it to pay for in-home care, assisted living, or nursing home costs. Not a reimbursement — proactive monthly payment.

🏠

Covers in-home care

Personal care assistance at home qualifies — bathing, grooming, dressing, mobility, medication reminders. The care doesn't have to be medical or provided by a licensed agency.

📋

Not automatic — must apply

This benefit requires a separate application to the VA. Many eligible veterans never receive it simply because they didn't know to apply. We help families start that process.

Benefits paid retroactively

Once approved, benefits are typically paid back to the date of application — so applying sooner means more money. Average approval takes 6–12 months; retroactive pay covers the wait.

Does my family qualify?

Answer these questions to get a quick read on eligibility. All three groups must apply. Most Johnson County veteran families are surprised how many of these they meet.

VA Aid & Attendance requires meeting three categories of criteria: military service, medical need, and financial limits. Check every box you can answer yes to.

1 — Military Service
90+ days of active duty service At least one day during a wartime period (WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Gulf War, etc.)
Discharged under conditions other than dishonorable Honorable, general, or other-than-dishonorable discharge qualifies
Surviving spouses also eligible Unremarried surviving spouses of qualifying veterans can apply independently
2 — Medical Need (at least one)
Age 65 or older Age alone satisfies the disability requirement for pension eligibility
Permanently and totally disabled Disability does not have to be service-connected for basic pension
Needs assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) Bathing, dressing, eating, toileting, transferring — needs help with one or more
Bedridden or in a nursing home Receiving nursing home care due to mental or physical incapacity also qualifies
3 — Financial Limits
Income below the maximum pension rate Countable income is offset by unreimbursed medical expenses — care costs reduce what counts as income
Net worth below $155,356 (2026 limit) Primary home and vehicle excluded. Countable assets include savings, investments, and secondary property
Not sure if you qualify? Call us — we'll walk through the checklist together. Many families who think they don't qualify actually do once care costs are factored against income.

How KindCare KC's services qualify

Personal care assistance — even non-medical — counts toward Aid & Attendance. Here's exactly what qualifies:

🛁

Personal hygiene assistance

Help with bathing, grooming, dressing, and oral hygiene. One of the most common qualifying ADLs — and one of our most-requested services.

🚶

Mobility and transfers

Assisting a veteran to safely move around the home, get in and out of bed or a chair, and prevent falls. Qualifies directly under ADL assistance criteria.

💊

Medication reminders

Reminding veterans to take prescribed medications at the right times. Doesn't require a nurse — non-medical reminders qualify.

🍽️

Meal preparation & feeding assistance

Cooking meals and assisting with eating when needed. Counts as ADL support toward Aid & Attendance qualification.

🧠

Dementia supervision and care

For veterans with Alzheimer's or dementia, supervision and behavioral support qualifies. KindCare KC specializes in veteran + dementia dual care at $34/hr.

🤝

Companionship and errands

Accompaniment to appointments, errands, and social engagement. While not directly an ADL, this care is frequently bundled with qualifying services.

We specialize in veteran care.

Working with veteran families is different — and we've built our service specifically around it.

📝

Benefits navigation

We help families understand the Aid & Attendance application process — what documents are needed, how to structure care costs to maximize the benefit, and who to contact at the VA.

🎖️

Veteran-trained caregivers

Our caregivers understand veteran culture, common service-related conditions (PTSD, TBI, mobility issues), and how to provide care that respects a veteran's sense of independence and pride.

🧠

Veteran + Dementia dual care

Many veteran families deal with both PTSD/TBI and dementia simultaneously. We specialize in this combination — one caregiver trained for both at $34/hr.
